Robot vacuum cleaner for your apartment

How to choose a robot vacuum cleaner for your apartment
Looking for a robot vacuum cleaner for your apartment? This article is for you. We will consider all the criteria for choosing a robot vacuum cleaner and give useful tips for owners of small (up to 60 m2) and large (60 m2) apartments.
Selection criteria for robot vacuum cleaners for apartments
Let's list the key criteria for choosing a robot vacuum cleaner for apartments:
Type of robot vacuum cleaner
Type of navigation system
Noise level
Battery capacity
Container capacity
Suction power
Types of robot vacuum cleaners for apartments:
  • 1
Robotic vacuum cleaners are designed only for dry cleaning. They simply collect debris from the floor (dust, wool, threads, hair, etc.), which falls into the dust canister. These models are suitable for regular cleaning of all hard surfaces, as well as carpets with pile heights up to 0.8" / 2 cm.
  • 2
Robotic vacuum cleaners with the function of a polisher. They have attachments for fixing special wipes. Their use increases the quality of cleaning. These models effectively pick up the fine dust left after dry cleaning. Expensive cloths are made of special materials that stay wet for a long time. This eliminates the need to dampen the cloth frequently.
  • 3
Washing robot vacuum cleaners. Have two containers (for clean and dirty water). The principle of operation looks like this. The robot sprays a liquid with detergent dissolved in it. The surface is wiped with brushes, the liquid is sucked into the second container. Such models are worth paying attention to, if a large or small apartment has no carpeting, laminate and unprotected wooden surfaces.
  • 4
Robotic vacuum cleaners with dry and wet cleaning functions. These models have water tanks in which a small amount of non-foaming detergent can be dissolved. The mixture is fed to the cloth evenly in moderate amounts. This makes such versatile robot vacuum cleaners suitable for cleaning surfaces of all types.

Choosing a robot vacuum cleaner by type of navigation
  • Infrared sensors (collision and height differences) + soft-touch bumper. This is the simplest navigation system. On this principle, most budget models move.

  • Bumper + gyroscope. This is an improved system. The gyroscope is a special device that responds to changes in the orientation angles of the robot vacuum cleaner relative to the inertial reference system. During operation, the angular velocity and acceleration of the device are measured. This gives information about the coordinates of the device. They are recorded in memory. As a result, the robot remembers where it came from, where it is moving to, and where it should return to.

  • External sensors. Such devices help the robot vacuum cleaner to build a virtual wall, that is, areas of the floor that do not need to be cleaned. The device is a compact box made of plastic. It signals to the vacuum cleaner the presence of an obstacle and limits its movement. This type of navigation works as an auxiliary.
  • Camera as a landmark. The camera is located on top of the vacuum cleaner and tracks the position of the device relative to the walls and ceiling. This is not the most accurate way to navigate.
  • Lidar is a laser sensor and is the most advanced type of navigation. Allows the vacuum cleaner to move around the apartment in the most precise way.
What battery to choose a vacuum cleaner with?
Robotic vacuum cleaners for large and small apartments are equipped with different battery capacity. In this case, the area that can clean a vacuum cleaner for one cycle of autonomous operation, depends not only on the characteristics of the battery.

In each model - all individually. On the amount of energy consumed by the device during autonomous operation has a large number of factors. Among them:
  • dimensions of the device
  • robot weight
  • robot type
  • complexity of navigation system
  • suction power
  • number of basic and additional functions
Suction power
The suction power of robots-vacuum cleaners varies from 20 to 35 watts. Bigger figures are not needed here, because the compact devices do not need to move the collected debris on a long hose in contrast to traditional vacuum cleaners.

Therefore, robot vacuum cleaners with a suction power of 30-35 watts are considered high-performance. These models perfectly remove dust and hair from all coverings (including carpets). If the carpet in the apartment is not, for cleaning is well suited model with a capacity of 20-25 watts.

Pay attention! Some manufacturers deceive buyers and specify not the suction power (20-35 W), but the power consumed by the device during operation (90-120 W). Take this into account when studying the technical specifications.
